Dangerous Stories

PArables

Once upon a time…

Who doesn’t love stories? They transcend time, culture, age and place. Stories are the universal language of the human heart. They teach, inspire, warn, entertain and can help us make sense of the world and our place in it.

Jesus was a master storyteller. His chosen method was the parable. Parables are a mix of simile, metaphor and allegory; kin do f like a miniature play in words. Jesus was a teacher of clear and specific concrete truths; however, his method was more akin to a poet or an artist than to a scientist. As one writer puts it, “Jesus parables have been described as both works of art and weapons in his conflict with opponents.”

Another commentator explains Jesus’ use of parables stating that “The reality of God is revealed in the word pictures of a parable. Jesus and the rabbis of old taught about God by using concrete illustrations that reach the heart through the imagination. They challenged the mind on the highest intellectual level by using simple stories that made common sense out of the complexities of religious faith and human experience.”

But these stories of Jesus have a shock value- a sting in the tale. We will dig deep to uncover how and why they shocked their first hearers and how they can help us discover more about God, the world we live in, and ourselves.

We encourage you to read the designated parable throughout the week and for Small Groups to deal with the parable after the Sunday it is preached.
